The Meaning of Jehovah Nissi

The Meaning of Jehovah Nissi

Moses built an altar and dedicated it to Jehovah Nissi which means the Lord our Banner in Exodus 17:15

In those days when armies were fighting they would  have banners in the battlefield to show which power they were fighting under. Winning the battle thus meant that that power had won.

The battle which led to Moses building an altar to Jehovah Nissi was an exceptional battle because when Moses held up his hand holding the Rod of God, the Israelites prevailed. When his hands went down, the Amalekites prevailed.

This shows us that the power that enabled the Israelites to win that battle was linked to the Rod of God that Moses raised in his hand.

Consequently, Aaron and Hur found a stone for Moses to sit on and they held up his hands the entire day until the battle was won.

Moses then built an altar to the Lord God and named it Jehovah Nissi. By so doing he was declaring that Jehovah was the power that had enabled them to win that war because he has been their banner.

Bible Study Lessons from Moses in Exodus 17 on Victory over Amalekites

This battle in which the Israelites obtained victory over the Amalekites can teach us the following lessons:

Pray to Jehovah Nissi
When you are engaged in a spiritual or a physical battle, pray to Jehovah Nissi so that He can help you win your battle the way He helped the Israelites win their battle with the Amalekites.

Support your Spiritual Leaders Spiritually
Spiritually support your spiritual leaders the way Aaron and Hur help up Moses hands.

Therefore regardless of whether your spiritual authority is a Bishop, Reverend, Pastor or Priest, hold them up in prayer by praying for them as they stand in the gap and pray for you and your community.

This is especially true for this period in 2020 when most spiritual authorities are standing in the gap and praying for their communities to overcome the current coronavirus pandemic.

Support your Spiritual Leaders Physically

Support your spiritual leaders physically the way Aaron and Hur provided Moses with a stone to sit on they held up his hands which held the Rod of God.

Therefore ensure that your still continue to give your offerings and pay your tithes to your Church even if most Churches around the world have been closed due to the Covid19 pandemic.

Consider even upgrading your giving so that your spiritual leader can focus his efforts on fighting the pandemic spiritually without using their time and energy to work to pay Church bills and other expenses.

Do Your Part
In this war every was doing their part:
Moses was holding up the Rod of God
Aaron and Hur were holding up the hands of Moses
Joshua was leading the Israelite men in the battlefield
The Israelite men were physically fighting the Amalekites

Therefore do not slacken off just because you know that your Moses (your Pastor) is praying and interceding. Ensure that you are doing your part to win the battle by praying for yourself, praying for your Pastor and supporting them in any other way.

You can also fast and sanctify your home as you prepare yourself for a move of God.

Use Your Rod
When God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He asked him, "What is in your hand?" Moses had his simple shepherd's rod and it became the Rod of God because of God's power.

This Rod of God turned into a snake when they were asking Pharaoh to release the Israelites.

Later when the Israelites were crying because they had been trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army, God said to Moses, "Lift up your rod and stretch your hand over the Red sea and divide it and the Israelites shall go on dry ground in the middle of the sea." (Exodus 14:5)

We can also see that holding up this Rod of God enabled the Israelites win their war with the Amalekites.

Therefore regardless of what is in you hand, pray and ask God to bless it so that you can use it to solve the problems you face in different stages of your life.

Commemorate Your Victories
Whenever God gives you a victory, do something to ensure that you do not forget it.

This is very important because one of the things that annoyed God was how the Israelites forgot all that He had done for them in Egypt so that Pharaoh could release them. This forgetfulness made them believe the 10 spies who told them they could not conquer the giants in their Promised Land even though God had brought 10 plagues on Egypt.

Therefore to avoid forgetting what God has done for you, when He helps you win any battle do the following:
1. Thank God

2. Write it in your Book of Blessings
Write it in your Book of Blessings so that the next time something else attacks you, you can remind yourself how He helped you win your past battle which means that He can also help you win your present battles. This will make you fearless as you face the enemy the way David faced gigantic Goliath fearlessly because he remineded himself that The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.

3. Mark it on your Calendar
Mark it on your calendar so that every year on that day you remind yourself of that victory and celebrate it. This is how feasts like the Passover are still celebrated today. We can also see God telling the Israelites several times to record things so that they can be passed down to future generations. Thus celebrating yearly will also teach your children the things that God has done for you and what God can also do for them.

4. Celebrate it
Celebrate your victories by buying yourself something to remind your of the event. You can also celebrate without spending money by doing something as simple as relaxing for an afternoon.
