Look Up to Fight Discouragement

When Abram talked to God about his situation of not having children and his wealth being inherited by his servant Eliezer, God took him outside and told him to "Look up toward heaven and count the stars if you can for so shall your descendants be." (Genesis 15:5)

Therefore if you are discouraged about any situation in your life do the following:
1. Do not focus horizontally
Focusing horizontally is focusing on your current dismal situation as it is.

In Abram's case it was his childless situation.

In your case it might be focusing your mind on your sickness, joblessness, singleness or impending divorce.

2. Do not focus vertically down
Focusing vertically down is focusing on the future your current dismal situation is suggesting you will have.

In Abram's case it was his servant inheriting his wealth.

In your case it might be focusing your mind on dying from your diseases, in poverty and alone.

3. Focus vertically up
Focusing vertically up is focusing on the future that God says you can have in His Word.

In Abram's case it was having descendants who were as many as the stars in the sky.

In your case it might be focusing your mind on Bible verses about:
health like By His stripes we were healed (Isaiah 53:5),
wealth like God has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant (Psalm 35:27
marriage like God sets the solitary in families (Psalm 68:6)
