Devotional: You shall not lie

Devotional Do not lie to God and to humans

You shall not lie. (Exodus 20:16)

Lying can seem like one of the "smaller sins" but it is such a terrible thing that God says He hates it for it is written, These are the 6 things that the Lord hates: Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
A proud look
A lying tongue
Hands that shed innocent blood
A heart that devises wicked imaginations
Feet that are swiftly run to mischief
A false witness that speaks lies
A person who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

Therefore find a way to stop lying either by commission or by omission so that you stop committing this sin which is actually an abomination to God.
You shall not lie Exodus 20:16
In addition to not lying to other humans because it is something that God hates, know that you can also lie to God and bring terrible problems into your life.

We can see a good example when Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a possession and kept back part of the proceeds bringing only a portion to the apostles. Peter then asked him, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart and caused you to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds? ... You have not lied to men but to God." (Acts 5:3-4)

As a result of trying to lie to God through lying to His servants, Ananias died on the spot. Three hours later when his wife came, she also lied to Peter when he questioned her about how much they had sold the land. He then asked her, "How is it you have agreed to test the Spirit of the Lord?(Acts 5:9) and she also fell down and died.

Therefore refrain from lying to God "indirectly" through trying to lie to His servants who are doing His will here on earth the way Ananias and Sapphira tried to lie to Peter and the other apostles.

Refrain also from trying to lie to God "directly" by telling Him lies when He questions you about something.

As you do this, ensure that you also refrain from lying to your fellow human being by commission and by omission.

Prayer
Heavenly Father I ask You in the name of Jesus to help me stop telling lies with my tongue or lying with my behavior.
Father God I also ask You to forgive me for all the times I have tried to lie to you, tried to lie to Your servants here on earth and lied to my fellow humans. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
