How to Stir Up the Gift of God that is in You (2 Timothy 1:6)

How to Stir Up the Gift of God that is in You (2 Timothy 1:6)

Paul told Timothy, "Stir up the gift of God that is in you." (2 Timothy 1:6)

God has given us all gifts and sometimes we need to heed Paul's advice and stir up those gifts within us.

So how do you stir up the gift of God that is inside you?

The answer to this question lies in the verse that follows this one because Paul said, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and a sound mind.(2 Timothy 1:7)

This suggests that Timothy was letting the spirit of fear stop him from stirring up and using the gift of God that was within him.
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)

To stir up the gift of God that is within you, you therefore need to do the following:

Overcome Fear
You have to overcome fear since it will stop you from stirring up and using the gifts that God has placed in you.

 Get God's Power
To get God's power, you have to connect with Him so that you can tap into His Power. Being imbued with God's power will help you start using your gifts boldly since you will stop feeling powerless.

How to connect with God

As you connect with God through prayer, ask Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit so that He can help you for we are told to Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find it, knock and it will be opened to you.

For those who ask receive, those who seek find and to those who knock it is opened …

If you being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more then will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!(Luke 11:9-13)
Your Heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Adapted Luke 11:13)

Love People
We are told, As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1 Peter 4:10)

Therefore the gift that you are stirring up inside you is to be used to minister to other people.

It is thus vital for you to develop love for people and especially those you will be ministering to with your gift.

To do this, continue praying to be filled with the Holy Spirit since The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience or longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

  2. Wonderful insight! I think we can all relate to having fear of using our gift sometimes because He wants us to have to ask Him to do it through us. That way He gets all the glory. If it was easy for us to do, we would think we did it on our own. Thanks for a great post!

    1. Yes, if it was easy we would think we did it on our own and that is why we have to connect with Him. Thanks for your comment.

  4. Thanks for your post. There's good wisdom here. The part about loving others spoke to me. I'm asking God to help me love others with the proper balance (not as a people pleaser).

    1. Yes, balance is important for many things in life including loving other people (as you rightly say it can lead to people-pleasing)and even loving ourselves as it can lead to selfishness.

  5. I am currently reading a book about Paul and his disciples. So true that even sometimes Paul would have fear, but God reminded him that he was there beside him, which is a great reminder when fear sets in. God is with us even when we aren't aware. Thanks for this blessing scripture reminder.

    1. It is wonderful that God is always there even if we are not aware because it gives us confidence to face life.

  6. I took time off from my life (husband and 3 kids) to spend the entire wedding day with her helping her however I could. I was available to run errands, put out fires or just give words of encouragement.XXL TeddyBär
