Free Bible Based Addiction Recovery Program step 11 How to deal with temptation

How to Deal with Temptation
It is important to learn how to deal with temptation before your Quit Date so that when you are tempted to engage in the addictive behavior after you quit you can fight it effectively.
To overcome with temptation successfully you have to:
1. Remind yourself of your commitment to be free
Remind yourself of your reasons for wanting to stop in engaging in the addictive behavior by reading your list and then encourage yourself by saying (loudly or silently in your heart) I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
2. Remind yourself you can resist it
Remind yourself that you can resist the temptation by confessing (loudly or silently in your heart) that No temptation has overtaken me except those which are common to man. But God is faithful and He will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear because with each temptation there will also be a way of escape so that I may be able to bear it. (Adapted 1 Corinthians 10:13)
3. Leave the tempting situation
Look for a way to physically leave the place where you are being tempted to engage in the addictive behavior.
If you cannot leave it physically, leave it mentally by directing your thoughts to Jesus by asking Him to help you for We do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. We have one who was tempted in all points just as we are and yet He was without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace so that we may obtain mercy and help in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)
In addition, before your Quit Date spend some time Practicing Guided Imagery by visualizing yourself in a situation where you are being tempted to engage in the addictive behavior and then visualize yourself resisting the temptation successfully.
