How to Fight Temptation with Bible Verses
Regardless of whether you are tempted to use illicit drugs or abuse prescription medications, alcohol and cigarettes or watch pornography, fornicate, commit adultery, murder, steal, lie or sin in any other way, you have to combine spiritual, mental, and physical interventions to form your own holistic deliverance ministry so that you do not succumb to the temptation.

The first spiritual step for overcoming temptation is to pray and ask Jesus to help you because the Bible tells us that We do not have a High Priest who is not able to sympathize with us in our weaknesses. We have One who has been tempted in all ways that we are tempted and yet He did not sin. Therefore, let us boldly come to the throne of grace so that we may find mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)

Therefore, begin praying in the middle of the tempting situation and ask Jesus to help you overcome it.

As you pray, use Scriptures since The sword of the spirit is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)

Bible verses that you can use as spiritual warfare prayers or personal deliverance prayers to help you resist temptation include:
1. Father God, this temptation that I am facing is not an unusual temptation because other people also face it. But, You are faithful and You will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear. Therefore, I ask You in the name of Jesus to show me the way out of this temptation so that I can resist it. (Adapted 1 Corinthians 10:13)
God is faithful. He will not allow me to be tempted more than I can bear. Because with each temptation there will always be a way of escape. 1 Corinthians 10:13

After praying look around to see how you can leave the tempting situation immediately. Learn from Joseph when Potiphar’s wife was tempting him to commit adultery for he fled and left the tempting situation in haste without even bothering to take back his cloak from her hand. (Genesis 39:12) Therefore, look for an exit and take it immediately.

If the way out of your tempting situation is not yet clear and you are not able to leave in haste, there are several things you can do to help you avoid succumbing to the temptation:

1. Stop looking at the temptation
The first thing you need to do to resist the temptation regardless of whether it is a person who wants you sin sexually with them or it is an illicit drug, alcohol or cigarettes you are being offered is to stop looking at the temptation. Learn from Eve because looking at the tempting fruit was her downfall for When Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasing to the eyes and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took its fruit and ate it. (Gen 3:6)

Therefore, avert your gaze from the temptation because if you continue staring at it, your perception of it will begin to change. It will begin to look like it can offer you a pleasurable experience or a new experience or add value to your life in some way.  The temptation will then begin to change from being a definite NO to a MAYBE and finally into a YES. You will then find a reason to justify yielding to the temptation and doing the wrong thing.

  1. This is such a powerful post - sword words are the weapons we must employ to live a good christian life free from sins of the flesh and of the spirit. Your mention of AIDS is timely as it is rapidly increasing amongst heterosexual communities as they pursue their careless and indulgent lifestyles.

  2. Thanks Judith for your lovely comment. The Word of God is truly powerful as exemplified by Jesus when He used it to fight temptation.
