Dealing with Depression Lesson 1 - Biblical therapy

Depression is a mental illness in which someone has the following symptoms nearly every day for two weeks or longer.

What are the Symptoms of Depression?
1. Feeling sad or unhappy or numb {My eyes are grief stricken, they grow old because of all my enemies. (Psalm 6:7)}

2. Lack of interest and pleasure in daily activities you previously enjoyed (I hate my life. Job 7:16)

3. Crying easily and for no apparent reason {I am tired of my crying; all night I drench my bed with tears. (Psalm 6:6)}

4. Feeling tired

5. Feeling worthless and hopeless (My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. Job 7:6)

6. Feeling guilty or fixated on past mistakes or failures

7. Feeling irritable or restless or agitated (I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet. Job 3:26)

Christian Biblical Principles for Dealing with Depression

Christian Depression Treatment
Prayer is the 1st principle of Christian Depression Treatment.

Emulate Jeremiah who called out to God when he was inside the ditch of depression and God heard delivered him. (Lamentations 3:52-56) Therefore, cry out to God because He will listen to your prayers and help you.

The following is a simple sample prayer you can pray to help you overcome depression:
Save me O my God!
For problems have come up to my neck.
I am sinking in deep depression,
I am in deep trouble and problems overwhelm me.
I am tired of crying and my prayer is to You.
O Lord, in the multitude of Your mercy hear me.
Deliver me from this ditch of depression and do not let me sink in it.
Deliver me from those who hate me and out of these deep troubles.
Do not let problems overwhelm me and do not let depression swallow me up.
(Adapted from Psalm 69)

  1. Nice post....

    Unfortunately there many people that suffer from a degree of depression that seems unbearable. Perhaps they don’t seek help, and therefore never get the chance to help themselves. Even so, to think of killing oneself is a very drastic step and most people need another factor to push them over the edge, without which they will remain resigned to their feelings and continue to suffer in silence. http://www.newportpsychotherapy.com/psychology_topics/depression_suicide_psychologist.html

  3. Stress Management
    Awareness of the Present

    The first, and most fundamental aspect of managing excessive stress is increasing one’s ability to become intensely focused on something (almost anything) right now here in the present, in a particular way. The aspects of that particular way are being as accepting, detached, and non-judgmental as one can be toward whatever it is that one is focused on in the moment..........
