The following is an excerpt from How to Fight Addiction with Bible Verses by Dr Miriam Kinai.

Bible verses are the foundation of any deliverance ministry and Christian spiritual warfare because the Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). We will therefore call the Scriptures we will use to fight addiction SWORD WORDS.

If you are trying to break free from addiction to illicit drugs, nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications, pornography, gambling, video games, internet surfing, watching TV, shopping, stealing, food, sugar, working, exercising or any other addiction, you have to combine spiritual, medical and psychological interventions and form your own holistic deliverance ministry.

Start with the spiritual interventions as they are the foundations of any deliverance ministry because you need to pull down the enemy’s strongholds in your life.

Begin your battle against addiction by getting saved so that you can put on the helmet of salvation. This helmet of salvation is one of the weapons of our warfare as it is part of the armor of God that we need to put on to fight our spiritual battles. (Ephesians 6:14-17)

All you need to put on this helmet of salvation is to say with your mouth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead when He died for our sins and you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

After getting saved the next step is saying deliverance prayers for yourself. SWORD WORDS that you can use to pray for yourself include: Direct my steps by Your word O God, and do not let sin dominate me and my life. (Psalm 119:133)

In addition read one chapter of the Bible everyday as this is also another of the weapons of our warfare and obey it when it says Let the wicked person forsake their way, and the unrighteous person abandon his thoughts. Let them return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them. (Isaiah 55:7)

Therefore stop thinking all evil, addiction inducing thoughts and Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old person who grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts of their flesh, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Put on the new person who was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24)

To remove those negative, unrighteous, addiction inducing thoughts from your mind so that you can Be renewed in the spirit of your mind (Ephesians 4:23) you have to set specific mediation session during the day when you can meditate on the following spiritual warfare scriptures:
1. My body is not for sexual immorality. It is for the Lord. (1 Corinthians 6:13)
2. I will abstain from every form of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
3. I will not be drunk with wine, for there is debauchery in drunkenness. (Ephesians 5:18)
4. I will not look at anything evil. (Psalm 101:3)
5. No temptation has overtaken me except those which are common to human beings. But God is faithful and He will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear because with each temptation there will also be a way of escape so that I may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Commit this spiritual warfare scripture to memory as it is one of the powerful warfare prayers that you should know by heart so that you can fight temptation immediately the urge to return to your addiction entices you. Remember that Jesus also used Bible verses or SWORD WORDS to fight temptations when the devil was tempting Him. (Matthew 4:4-10)

Other spiritual warfare scriptures that should be a key part of your meditation sessions include:
1. I will present my body as a living sacrifice that is holy and acceptable to God because that is my reasonable service to Him. (Adapted Romans 12:1)
2. I will make no provision to fulfill the lusts of the flesh. (Adapted Romans 13:14)
3. I will walk properly, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust and not in strife or envy. (Adapted Romans 13:13)
4. I will stand and overcome because God is able to make me stand. (Adapted Romans 14:4)
5. I will fear God and depart from evil and that will bring health to my flesh and strength to my bones. (Adapted Proverbs 3:7-8)
6. I will not be deceived because neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (Adapted 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

As you continue with the spiritual interventions of renewing your mind by meditating on the Word of God, saying your warfare prayers and reading other spiritual warfare books such as SWORD WORDS, you can now begin with the medical and psychological interventions to stop your addiction to illicit drugs, nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications, pornography, gambling, video games, internet surfing, watching TV, shopping, stealing, food, sugar, working or exercising
