How to Deal with Withdrawal Symptoms
Many addictive behaviors result in physical dependence which causes unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when the person stops engaging in the addictive behavior.

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the addictive habit and on the individual. They often last for around 1 week and they include irritability, anxiety, nervousness, sleepless, headaches, difficulty concentrating, increased appetite and feeling low or depressed.

It is important to learn how to deal with withdrawal symptoms before your Quit Date so that when you experience them after you quit you can overcome them effectively.
To deal with withdrawal symptoms successfully you have to:
1. Consult your doctor
Consult your nearest doctor if you develop severe withdrawal symptoms or if you are concerned about them.
2. Pray for strength
Pray for strength to deal with the withdrawal symptoms and confess Bible verse like In all these things I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ Who loves me. (Romans 8:37)
3. Manage the specific withdrawal symptoms
For example, if you feel stressed, anxious, nervous or you have difficulty concentrating, meditate on Bible verses and take several deep breaths.

If your appetite increases feed on low calorie foods like fruits, vegetable and popcorn.

If you feel irritable, low, depressed or develop insomnia exercise for at least 30 minutes each day.
Guided imagery for addiction treatment

In addition, before your Quit Date spend some time Practicing Guided Imagery by visualizing yourself experiencing withdrawal symptoms and then visualize yourself dealing with them successfully. This is especially useful if you had tried to quit engaging in the addictive behavior before but were unable to do so for long because of the withdrawal symptoms.

Examine Yourself
Let each person examine their own work so that they will rejoice in themselves alone and not in another for each person shall bear their own load. (Galatians 6:4-5)

Let us examine ourselves and return to the Lord. (Lamentations 3:40)

Therefore examine yourself each evening and confess any sins you committed that day to God.

In addition, write down the names of the people you wronged and what you did to them when you were engaging in the addictive behavior.

For example the wrong actions you did may have included stealing money from others to feed the addiction or even stealing time from your boss as you surfed the websites you were addicted to during work hours.
Let each person examine their own work so that they will rejoice in themselves alone and not in another for each person shall bear their own load. (Galatians 6:4-5)

Let us examine ourselves and return to the Lord. (Lamentations 3:40)

How to Deal with Cravings
It is important to learn how to deal with cravings before your Quit Date so that when you experience them after you quit you can overcome them effectively.
To deal with cravings successfully you have to:
1. Remind yourself they last for 5 minutes
Remind yourself that most cravings last for 5 minutes and thus it is better to deal with the discomfort of waiting them out for 5 minutes rather than struggle with the addiction for the rest of your life.
2. Develop 5 minute strategies
Develop distraction strategies that last for 5 minutes that can use to keep yourself busy until the cravings pass. These can include:
a. Spiritual Distractions
Praying for God to help you then confessing Bible verses like No temptation has overtaken me except those which are common to man. But God is faithful and He will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear because with each temptation there will also be a way of escape so that I may be able to bear it. (Adapted 1 Corinthians 10:13)
b. Mental Distractions
Remind yourself of your reasons for wanting to stop in engaging in the addictive behavior by reading your list and then encourage yourself by meditating on Bible verses like In all these things I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ Who loves me. (Romans 8:37)
c. Physical Distractions
Do something you enjoy that is not related to the addictive behavior. For example you read a book you really love or play a video game or exercise or chewing gum.
For the best results create your own combination of spiritual, mental and physical distractions to deal with the cravings. For example you can pray, meditate on a Bible verse and then do 20 sit-ups.
In addition, before your Quit Date spend some time Practicing Guided Imagery by visualizing yourself in a situation where you are craving to engage in the addictive behavior and then visualize yourself overcoming the craving successfully.

Take It To Jesus

Take it to Jesus

Do you have a persistent problem that has made you move from specialist to specialist looking for a solution?

If you do, understand that it is time you took the problem directly to Jesus.

We can see this from the woman who suffered with a bleeding disease for 12 years because after she spent all her money moving from specialist to specialist seeking a cure, she decided to take it to Jesus and she was healed. (Mark 5:25-35)

She took her problem directly to Jesus instead of looking for another specialist and her problem was solved. Therefore emulate her and take your problem to Jesus today.
We do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses because He was temped just as we are and yet He was without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace so that we may obtain mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrew 4:15-16

Or do you have a persistent problem that has made you move from preacher to preacher looking for help?

If you do, understand that it is time you took the problem directly to Jesus instead of looking for another preacher.

We can see this from the man who cried out to Him saying, "Teacher, I beg You please look on my son because he is my only child for a spirit seizes him and convulses him ... I asked Your disciples to cast it out but they could not." ... Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the child. (Luke 9:37-42)

He took his problem to Jesus instead of looking for another follower of Jesus to help him and his problem was solved. Therefore emulate him and take your problem to Jesus today.

How to Deal with Temptation
It is important to learn how to deal with temptation before your Quit Date so that when you are tempted to engage in the addictive behavior after you quit you can fight it effectively.
To overcome with temptation successfully you have to:
1. Remind yourself of your commitment to be free
Remind yourself of your reasons for wanting to stop in engaging in the addictive behavior by reading your list and then encourage yourself by saying (loudly or silently in your heart) I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
2. Remind yourself you can resist it
Remind yourself that you can resist the temptation by confessing (loudly or silently in your heart) that No temptation has overtaken me except those which are common to man. But God is faithful and He will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear because with each temptation there will also be a way of escape so that I may be able to bear it. (Adapted 1 Corinthians 10:13)
3. Leave the tempting situation
Look for a way to physically leave the place where you are being tempted to engage in the addictive behavior.
If you cannot leave it physically, leave it mentally by directing your thoughts to Jesus by asking Him to help you for We do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. We have one who was tempted in all points just as we are and yet He was without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace so that we may obtain mercy and help in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)
In addition, before your Quit Date spend some time Practicing Guided Imagery by visualizing yourself in a situation where you are being tempted to engage in the addictive behavior and then visualize yourself resisting the temptation successfully.

Devices of the Devil - Hiring False Prophets

Devices of the Devil

Hiring false prophets is another device the devil uses to harm God’s people.

We can see this when King Balak of the Moabites hired Balaam to curse the Israelites. (Numbers 22:4-6)

Therefore ask God to also fill you with His Holy Spirit, The Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge and the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2) so that you can discern whether or not the things being prophesied to you are from God.

In addition, ask God to also turn curses into blessings the way Balaam was hired to curse the Israelites but ended up blessing them.

Step 10
Guard Your Heart
Guard your heart diligently for the issues of life flow from it. (Proverbs 4:23)

Put on the breastplate of righteousness. (Ephesians 6)

Therefore if you want good issues to flow from your heart into the rest of your life, you have to guard your heart and ensure that bad things do not enter it.

To guard your heart and stop bad things from entering, ensure that you wear the breastplate of righteousness by doing the right thing in the sight of God all the time.

Protect all the entry points into your heart and life with righteousness by doing the following:
a. Only looking at things that are right in the sight of God (eyes)

b. Only listening to things that are right in the sight of God (ears)

c. Only consuming and saying things that are right in the sight of God (mouth)

d. Only touching things that are right in the sight of God (hands)

e. Only thinking things that are right in the sight of God (mind)

Guard your heart diligently for the issues of life flow from it Proverbs 4:23

Put on the breastplate of righteousness Ephesians 6

In addition to stopping bad things from entering your heart and life, understand that you also have to feed your heart and life with good things that are not related to the addictive behavior so that you will be in a better position to overcome it since God is not mocked for whatever a person sows they shall.

To sow good things into your heart and life do the following:
a. Schedule time to look at things that are right in the sight of God (eyes) e.g. reading your Bible.

b. Schedule time to listen to things that are right in the sight of God (ears) e.g. listening to Christian preachers and motivational speakers.

c. Schedule time to consume and say things that are right in the sight of God (mouth) e.g. eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and speaking Christian affirmations over yourself.

d. Schedule time to touch things that are right in the sight of God (hands) e.g. engaging in hobbies that are not related to the addictive behavior like gardening and exercising.

e. Schedule time to think things that are right in the sight of God (mind) e.g. meditating on the Word of God.
God is not mocked. For whatsoever a person sows they shall reap. Galatians 6:7

Set Up Your Reward System
Set up your reward system by deciding how and when you will reward yourself for not engaging in the addictive behavior. For example, you can decide that:
If you do not engage in the addictive behavior for 1 day you will spend $1.00 on yourself.

If you do not engage in the addictive behavior for 1 week you will spend $10.00 on yourself.

If you do not engage in the addictive behavior for 1 month you will splurge $100.00 on yourself.

If you do not engage in the addictive behavior for 1 year you will splurge $1000.00 on yourself.

Write down your reward system and hang it on a place where you can see it every day.

Combine writing down your reward system with preparing your reward.

For example, if you decide to reward yourself with money you can begin saving in a special bank account or in a piggy bank in your home.

In addition, reduce the number of times you engage in the addictive behavior by 3/4. For example, if you used to engage in it 12 times a week at the beginning of this program, begin engaging in it 3 times a week from now on.

Step 9
Visualize
Write down the vision and make it plain. (Habakkuk 2:2)

Science has shown that our thoughts influence our feelings and our behaviors. Therefore if you want to change the addictive behavior, you have to change your thoughts.

To do this, regularly visualize yourself free from engaging in the addictive behavior. As you do this, use all your senses to see, hear, taste, touch and feel yourself free from the addiction.

For instance, imagine yourself living a full day without engaging in the addictive behavior by answering the following questions:
1. What would I do from morning to evening?

2. Who would I do it with?

3. How would I feel?

To help bring your vision to life, create a vision board by cutting pictures from magazines that depict your addiction-free life. Paste these images on a board and hang it where you can see it every day to remind yourself of your vision of living free from the addictive behavior.

Ensure that you look at the vision board every day as you visualize yourself free from the addiction and believe that you can achieve you vision and live it.
Write down the vision and make it plain so that he may run who reads it Habakkuk 2:2

Practice Guided Imagery
Guided imagery is an effective relaxation technique which can also help you cope with the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior.

Guided imagery involves seeing yourself with your mind’s eye in the situation when you are most likely to engage in the addictive behavior and then envisioning yourself using various strategies to overcome the temptation.

For example after answering the question, “Who Do I Engage In The Addictive Behavior With?” if you cannot avoid that person (e.g. your spouse), visualize yourself with that person resisting the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior and doing something else with them instead.

After answering the question, “Where Do I Engage In The Addictive Behavior?”  if you cannot avoid the place (e.g. your bedroom), visualize yourself in that place resisting the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior and doing something else instead.

After answering the question, “When Do I Engage In The Addictive Behavior?”, visualize yourself during that time resisting the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior and doing something else instead.

After answering the question, “What Do I Use To Engage In The Addictive Behavior?” if you cannot avoid those items (e.g. your laptop), visualize yourself with the item resisting the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior and doing something else.

After answering the question, “Why Do I Engage In The Addictive Behavior?” visualize yourself experiencing those feelings (e.g. feeling stressed) and resisting the temptation to engage in the addictive behavior by doing something else instead.
